"Menagerie"

Terri Kern about the process "I made several pieces in this tilted form series by throwing slightly closed bowl forms on the wheel. When the bowl was dry enough to handle, I trimmed the clay (usually left at the bottom of the piece to form the foot) completely off. After deciding what angle would work best to create the tilted form, I used a wooden paddle to create a flat area that would act as the new bottom of the piece. A combination of hand made stencils and surface drawing with a pencil were used to lay out my design and create the narrative imagery on this piece. I wanted to increase the tactile quality of the surface so I carved the turtles, seaweed and jellyfish in relief along with a subtle wave pattern in the background. I typically use 5-7 different carving tools to get the results I’m looking for. After the piece dried completely, I painted the surface with multiple layers of underglaze, all before firing the piece in the kiln for the first time. The carving in the background of the piece helps create a subtle, dappled effect as the painted underglaze clings more heavily to the recessed areas. To help add to the feeling of movement on the surface, there are areas where I used an exacto knife to split black painted lines in half, allowing the background color to show through. It’s easiest to see this detail on the spotted pattern of the sea snake which is painted around the bottom of the piece in the other photo. I balanced the form on metal stilts during the second firing so that the entire surface could be finished with a clear glaze. I love that the tilted interior slowly reveals itself as the viewer walks around the piece to discover a couple of painted fish swimming near the bottom. In order to paint the details in the interior, my brushes are held near the end of their handles. I usually hold my breath while painting each delicate outline and the individual detail lines in the interior because any movement can cause a miscalculation."

"Voyagers"

Terri Kern about the process " This bottle form was thrown on the wheel, appendages were added the the bottom to create feet and then it was carved in relief. Multiple layers of underglaze were painted on the surface of this piece to get the rich color. Each layer of painted underglaze is translucent and I can control the opacity of the underglaze by deciding how many layers to apply to the surface. You can see the translucent nature of the underglaze in the clouds, where the darker blue of the background peeks through in places. You’ll notice that each fish has it’s own unique scale pattern and that a couple are wearing masks. I used my wet black sgraffito technique to create the dotted pattern on the rim of the bottle, some of the waves and the circular line pattern on the bottom of the piece. I paint the black underglaze on in small sections, about the size of a dime, and while the underglaze is wet, I carve through the surface to reveal the background color. I love the movement that I can create with this technique. Narratively, seafaring imagery and sea life map my artistic journey. For me, art is about visual communication, sharing experiences through an object that I’ve made, taking risks, learning new skills, trying to find the right images to convey greater concepts. It’s a complicated process that requires perseverance, patience and practice. Ceramics is 50% art and 50% science. The clay, underglaze and glaze are made up of organic materials, that by their very nature, are constantly changing. When that happens, I have to adapt, plot a new course, do some creative problem solving and explore new waters."

"This dragon piece is hand painted with underglaze which is a liquid clay that is available in a multitude of colors. I always compare underglaze to watercolor. They are both translucent when painted on the surface of a vessel or a piece of paper. To build up the rich quality of the color, I paint multiple layers of the translucent underglaze on the surfaces of my pieces. Once the colorful painting is completed, I outline all the images with black underglaze and paint thousands of tiny lines to give additional depth to the painting. The background behind the dragon is alive with tiny carved lines that bring additional movement to the narrative story on the surface. As you can see, I also paint the bottoms of my pieces. I look at every surface as an opportunity to communicate with narrative and design, even if it’s not immediately seen."

Terri Kern about the process "This piece is packed with narrative, detail and design. There are hundreds and hundreds of painted and carved lines and dots which provide the movement, pattern and depth for this piece. It is 1 of only 2 pieces in the show that has miniature, full color underglaze paintings included on the painted surfaces encompassing the piece. I like to repeat areas of detail that move throughout the piece, drawing the viewer’s eye from top to bottom and back again. In this piece, I’ve used three black bands of black sgraffito to do that. The tiny dots on the top and bottom rim of this piece are carved through small areas of wet black underglaze, as are the lines that are carved into the band beneath the running rabbit. Some of the painted leaves in this band also have a dash pattern that is repeated on the top and bottom rim as well. The narrative for this piece relates to the concept of Balance which is woven throughout my work as I reflect upon and create pieces about my life, which has grown rich with possibilities and complications. The rabbit alludes to the idea of strength through endurance, a quality that I’ve had to develop as a woman and an artist, often away from my home and my husband of 21 years. The fox represents the idea of being steadfast and true. He patiently waits for me in one painting and in the other, he calls to me, trying to lure me back home. The book represents the idea of our combined and ever evolving history together. Every day, we “write” on the pages in our book, selecting new adjectives to describe the people we are trying to become, the characteristics we are trying to master. It’s important to read each other’s pages, so that as we grow and evolve in different ways, we stay connected and hopeful for what the next day brings. The leaves indicate change and the blank piece of paper inside the piece symbolizes ideas and experiences to be investigated."
