Gary Hootman attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1990 with a Masters in Fine Arts. Gary built and maintained a home studio in Swisher, Iowa for a number of years. Well known for his wood kiln building skills Gary traveled in Iowa and overseas to lead and assist in kiln building and firing. Gary made functional wheel thrown ceramics that he then wood fired in his home kiln. Gary continued to make and fire work as he battled with lung cancer.
